I’ve really enjoyed sharing the progress and updates on our home with you guys. It’s been a lot of fun seeing it all come together – slowly but surely.
We finally have a space for our guests that I am proud of. Calling it a “reveal” is kind of cringe worthy though. I’ve shared a few photos over on my Instagram page @amyepeters but also wanted to share it over here so all of the sources are in one easy place. And also, so I can talk a little more about the design and my thought process for our guest room!
A good before / after photo would really showcase what we did – but sadly I don’t have one. My goal for our guest room was to make it feel larger and brighter, and more cozy and inviting for our friends + family. Since this room is in our basement I really wanted it to feel warm. We only have a small window so keeping the space white with a blank canvas helped to keep the room minimal, clean and bright.
For the decor, we went with this sleek Tessu bed that is great for small spaces. I love the lower headboard for our guestroom. I didn’t want anything too bulky or grand. The material is gorgeous and the perfect neutral. Above the bed we went with this picture ledge that was custom made by my friend Mary-Ellen @powerdesignshalifax. The artwork can be switched out easily which is nice so if I wanted to change it out, I’m not committing to putting holes in the wall! The artwork and frames are all from Opposite Wall.
I used this GORGEOUS Hira ottoman as a bedside table and styled it with a tray and used some grass I picked from a ditch and a few nicknacks I’ve had kicking around. It was LOVE at first sight when I laid eyes on the ottoman, the fabric, the texture, the colour is perfection. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I want to move the ottoman so I can see and enjoy it more in a space we use daily.
LIGHTING
For me, a good light fixture can make or break a room. Lighting helps define a space and acts as a focal point in a room and also helps to pull the overall theme or vibe of a room together. Many friends ask me for help when it comes to light fixtures – and I’m game for it. There are so many styles out there it can be daunting. I’m a big fan of the Mitizi line from the Hudson Valley Group. Their entire line is designed with thoughtful simplicity, gorgeous details and its very well priced! This Paige light fixture grabbed my attention with the round bulbs and aged brass finishes. I just LOVE the details. I also added a ceiling medallion to add a little more dimension to the room.
For a little extra storage I got this INCREDIBLE rattan cabinet from IKEA Canada OF ALL PLACES. The rattan with the brushed brass handles had my name written all over it. It has great storage and it is just so lovely on its own. SO happy I snagged this piece – I’ve heard it isn’t available in the US and it has been out of stock in Canada here for a while now – here’s hoping it comes back in stock! The basket is also from IKEA, its a cute way to store extra blankets or all of my throw pillows 🙂
I wanted to hide the carpet as much as possible so we went with an 8×10 light textured rug, layered with this circular jute rug. The 8×10 size worked well under our sleek king sized bed in this space! If you’re into the circular jute rugs this one is a really great price. I originally got this for my office but I feel like it suites this room even better.
For the decor, I layered textures and materials without being too matchy-matchy. I stuck with a neutral color pallet to achieve a cosy vibe. My throw pillows are from a Canadian shop Rug and Weave and also Loloi. The gorgeous chunky knit 100% merino wool blanket is from WolletjeBol a shop in the Netherlands, hand knit with love. The other throw blankets are from Walmart Canada and HomeSense. There are still a few things I’d like to do – maybe add some new blinds, hang an antique mirror that has been sitting on the floor since March – yup March (it’s now October!) and finish off that one corner with a few items that I will find throughout our travels. I also have a gorgeous vintage chair for the corner but it still needs some finishing touches.
As much as I love to “complete” a space with these final touches, I also don’t like to rush the details or go out and purchase everything in a short time frame. TRUST ME – I WANT TOO but I really enjoy collecting things that hold meaning. I will be on the hunt!
Hope you enjoyed reading. Leave me a comment if you have any questions or if I left anything out!
XO Amy
