My all time favorite season is quickly approaching. I’ve always loved summer so much – no school, warm temperatures, and always lots of fun. I’d like for my children Avery (age 5) and Archer (age 3) to have these same fond memories of their childhood summers.
This is the first summer where Avery is school aged – so that means he is off ALL summer. I’m looking forward to it – but maybe ask me again in another month! I have a little strategy in place to help us survive the summer…
Have a plan. This is key with young children. We try to get out of the house in the mornings to burn off energy. And we also aim to have some consistency with snack and lunch time even when we are on the go. Both of my children are old enough express what they are interested in doing so I try to include them when we are making plans/activities for our week.
Set a budget. We have a few activities we like to do such at our local museums or discovery center which have admission fees (unless you are already a member) but we also love doing free outings. This includes going to the playground or splash pad, having a picnic at the park, a playdate with friends, or a day at the beach. We always bring lots of snacks, sunscreen and drinks to stay hydrated and we will sometimes splurge on a treat or ice cream while we are out.
Be prepared + stock up on supplies. Coloring books, crayons, stickers, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and other crafting items. It’s great to be prepared so you can get the most out of your summer and it’s also nice to have a back up plan for rainy days!
Lastly, just embrace the days that don’t go as planned. Its ok to stay in pj’s and watch movies all day – just don’t forget the popcorn!
