Happy Thursday! I’ve been wanting to give our dining area a little refresh for quite some time – I’m talking two years! We had been using our old dining room table that we received as an early wedding gift almost 10 years ago. Wow that makes me feel old. Since we had the table for so long, it held some sentimental value but it just didn’t work in our space so it was time for a refresh!
We really love how it all came together.

Since I always get many questions about home decor, I wanted to share more about these pieces, why we went with them and also a few other thoughts about our refresh and how to make it feel fresh and functional.

Let me just start by saying our home has been a labour of love and it’s taken patience and time to find the right pieces that fit our space and suit our style. DON’T RUSH THE PROCESS. Otherwise you might end up buying something you don’t truly love, then you might end up replacing it sooner than later.
Before we bought this home, I loved how the dining area was open and directly off our kitchen – unlike our old century home in downtown Halifax. I still remember before we officially moved in, our boys dancing in the empty space where our dining table was going to go. I envisioned us having family meals together, entertaining and lots of laughter. Since our family is still young, I wanted to have a bright happy space for meals, for completing homework, colouring and a space to hang out.

To be completely honest, I have a home office but I do most of my work right here at the dining table. From responding to emails, planning content, writing or just pinning and planning our next project. This space has amazing light – {which made it difficult for me, not a professional photographer to photograph}. In general this space makes me happy and I love that it doesn’t feel too formal. We are actually a pretty casual and not a super fancy kind of family.

If you follow me on instagram then you’d know I love wood tones throughout my home. It brings such a nice warmth to a space. You may also notice that I tend to mix different wood tones and it all seems to work together. I am not a designer or a pro at this, but I always try to stay within the same tonal family and similar finish within a space, making it all flow. Having multiple wood tones or natural materials like rattan or bamboo, helps to bring interest/textures into the room and a little warmth – this is especially helpful when your whole house is white like mine 🙂

Our table is the JURA wood table from MOBILIA. It has beautiful knots and streaks for a really natural look. The black cast iron legs are a nice statement. We wanted a bench for the kids to sit at so we went with the matching Jura wood Bench. We decided to go with mismatched chairs which I LOVE. Partly because I really love the mismatched look, but also because I had a hard time deciding between the two new styles from the ETHNIC INFLUENCES & BOTANICAL TOUCHES collection. Both chairs, Set Bamboo Accent Chair and the Sumatra Armchair are stunning and I love how the black legs help tie it all together.
For tablescape I keep it pretty simple – because kids. Even when we have friends and family over the centerpiece and table decor stays pretty basic. I still haven’t reached that point in ADULTING where I get too fancy on top of the table. I love the macrame runner. It would look great with a large vase and some branchy greenery or multiple vases would also look great.
Lighting:
As much as I love this light fixture, I feel like I’d eventually like to change it up. I have another spot in my home for this beauty fixture (but that’s another project for another day). So now that we’ve given our dining table + chairs a refresh I would like to change up the lighting to something a little different. I’ve had my eye on one but since we have no windows in our kitchen, I don’t want a light fixture to be too large that it could actually prevent natural light from coming in. At the same time, since our home is open concept, I also want to make sure the lighting transitions from other areas of our home. So for now – this light stays but don’t be surprised if I change it out in the future 🙂

Since our home is open concept, and the dining area is located in the back of our home you can still see it as soon as you walk through our front door. I love the special and unique elements of our new table set and I love how these elements compliment the other areas in our main level – the whole space flows beautifully. Even the touches of black in our living room tie in with the black legs of the table and chairs in a subtle way.

I love a good area rug, especially one that will help define the area. We opted for a rug with pattern so that it would help conceal any spill or crumbs – because with two young kids, spills are bound to happen. We went with this beautiful rug

So there you have it. Our dining room reveal. I wanted something unique and interesting and I think we achieved precisely that.
